Oscar Pistorius returned to court on Friday as South African prosecutors sought to extend his six-year sentence, Fox News noted.

The former Paralympic and Olympic sprinter was found guilty of culpable homicide, a charge in South Africa similar to manslaughter, for the death of Reeva Steenkamp who was shot through a locked bathroom door on Valentine's Day 2013.

The so-called "Blade Runner" claims he mistook his girlfriend for a burglar.

Pistorius was sentenced to six years imprisonment in 2015, the minimum sentence for a murder that was not premeditated.

This week prosecutors appealed to the Supreme Court of Appeals to extend the sentence to at least 15 years, making it their second challenge in two years.

According to NBC News, Judge Thokozile Masipa's verdict of culpable homicide was overturned in 2015 and a murder conviction was issued for which Pistorius was handed the six years in prison sentence.

However, prosecutors said the sentence is "shockingly light" and demanded that Pistorius serve at least 15 years behind bars, BBC reported.

Prosecutor Andrea Johnson said the sentence failed to match the gravity of the crime.

"What we are saying is the court exercised its discretion inappropriately," Johnson said, according to Fox News.

She added that Pistorius had not demonstrated any "genuine remorse" for shooting Steenkamp.

"Genuine contrition can only come from admission of the extent of one's error, not simply feeling sorry for himself," said Johnson, per NBC News.
