Oscar Pistorius Bar Altercation Reported During Break in Trial

By    |   Tuesday, 15 July 2014 11:58 AM EDT

Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius, on trial for murder in the death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, isn't keeping a low profile while the court is on a break. He reportedly got into an altercation at a bar in Johannesburg over the weekend.

Pistorius, who is facing life in prison, found himself getting into a verbal sparring match with another man at the VIP Nightclub Sandton, according to E! News.

Pistorius was confronted by a man identified as "Mr. Mortimer" and "started to aggressively interrogate him on matters relating to the trial," a Pistorius spokesman told NBC News. "An argument ensued during which my client asked to be left alone. Oscar soon thereafter left the club with his cousin."

The man, identified by South Africa's Eye Witness News as Jared Mortimer, told the television station that Pistorius was drunk and insulted his friends. Mortimer did admit he pushed Pistorius off his feet and into a chair before club bouncers stepped in.

On Sunday, Pistorius broke his Twitter silence when he posted a screenshot from Viktor Frankl’s book "Man’s Search for Meaning," as well as a collage of inspirational photos:

Pistorius, who won acclaim as a double-amputee sprinter with the help of specially-made prosthetics, will return to court Aug. 7 for closing arguments in his murder trial. Pistorius had his lower legs amputated when he was 11 months old after he was born without fibulas, the slender bones that run from below the knee to the ankle.

He remains free on bail. Pistorius could get 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder, but his sentence could be much shorter if he is convicted of murder without premeditation or negligent killing.

The shooting death of Steenkamp, 29, came on Valentine's Day 2013 at Pistorius' home. The runner has maintained that he fired through a closed bathroom door thinking there was an intruder in the house.
