The Oscars 2016 came through for Leonardo DiCaprio, making his expected win for Best Actor in "The Revenant" a reality, and delivered a surprise for Best Picture, the highly unlikely "Spotlight."

"Mad Max: Fury Road" captured six Academy Awards and "The Revenant" won three, including Alejandro G. Inarritu for Best Director. Inarritu won three Oscars last year, including best director and best picture for "Birdman."

But it was "Spotlight," a movie about the Boston Globe's efforts to uncover a child molestation scandal at a local archdiocese, which took home Best Picture. Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy had earlier won best original screenplay for "Spotlight."

It was DiCaprio's first win in six nominations, said People magazine, and the 41-year-old actor praised Inarritu for bringing the story to the big screen, noted the magazine.

"This was true storytelling," DiCaprio said of "The Revenant." "We really got to have a collaborative experience together and this was a journey that I'll never forget with Alejandro. It took up such a large portion of our lives, but as a result we have a great film to look back on for years to come."

E! News said the "Internet literally broke" after DiCaprio's best actor win, with praise from fellow celebrities and fans.
