Orphan Otter Found in California Recovered, Moved to Chicago Aquarium

An orphaned sea otter pup found along a California shoreline in critical condition last month has recovered well and traveled across the country to a new home at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium.

The one-week-old pup, just over two pounds in size, was discovered by someone out for an evening stroll on Coastways Beach, according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Sea Otter Program. The baby otter, named Pup 681, was rescued the next day.

"On arrival at Monterey Bay Aquarium, 681 weighed 1.0kg, which is tiny for a newborn sea otter, and she had been separated from mom for at least 16 hours. This meant it was critical that we begin to get calories into her as quickly as possible," said Karl Mayer, with the Sea Otter Program, in a release.

The California aquarium is one of only a handful in the country able to give the round-the-clock care that abandoned sea otter pups require, the release said. The organization has saved almost 700 sea otter adults and pups since the rescue program was started in 1984.

Now, Pup 681 has found a new home at Shedd Aquarium, which welcomed the pup to its facilities on Oct. 28, a release said.

The aquarium posted a YouTube video of the pup’s squealing arrival, and noted that it now weighs just under six pounds at almost five weeks old. The animal still requires intensive care.

"Pup 681’s situation was urgent. As an organization dedicated to marine mammal care and conservation, we were perfectly positioned to ensure that this little pup had a home, providing the long-term care needed to survive," Tim Binder, vice president of Animal Collections for Shedd, said in a press release with Montery Bay.

"This rescued animal provides an opportunity for us to learn more about the biological and behavioral attributes of this threatened species and to encourage people to preserve and protect them in the wild."
