Orange County Sinkhole Swallows Backyard Day After Pool Party

By    |   Tuesday, 04 Jun 2013 10:05 AM

A 50-foot-wide sinkhole forced a home evacuation in Orange County, Fla., Monday night after it swallowed a backyard and a swimming pool, a day after the resident hosted a pool party.

"[The residents] came back from dinner and half the backyard was gone," Battalion Chief Billy Richardson told the Orlando Sentinel.

The property, which records indicate is owned by a Suzanne Blumenauer, was evacuated when the hole came within 20 feet of the home. The residents opted to stay with a friend until county officials say it's safe to remain in the house, Richardson said.

Geologists are expected to further investigate and try to determine the cause of the sinkhole Tuesday.

Neighbors in close proximity to the sinkhole were worried.

"It definitely concerns me, but there is not much I can do until someone knocks on my door and lets me know 'hey, it might not be safe. You might want to evacuate.' I hope it doesn’t come, but you never know. I've got my fingers crossed," neighbor James Russo told Bay News 9.

Sinkholes are common in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The state lies on bedrock made of limestone or other carbonate rock that can be eaten away by acidic groundwater, forming voids that collapse when the rock can no longer support the weight of what's above it.
