Olivia Colman will join "The Crown," replacing Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth for seasons three and four of the Netflix period drama, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Emmy nominee Foy was signed on to the show for two seasons but knew from the outset that the role would be recast as each season of "The Crown" covers a decade of the queen's life.

"That's not a shock – we always knew when we signed up to it," she said, according to People magazine. "And also not to be funny but it's also a real plus.

Series creator Peter Morgan chatted to Variety about his intentions to replace cast members in later seasons.

"What's so beautiful about Claire is her youth," he said ahead of the season one premiere. "You can't ask someone to act middle-aged. Someone has to bring their own fatigue to it. The feelings we all have as 50-year-olds are different than the feelings we all have as 30-year-olds. That informs everything we do."

Series one of "The Crown" saw Foy portray The Queen during her earlier reign and season two will have her return to Buckingham Palace when it is released in December, The Guardian noted.

Although Netflix confirmed earlier this week that Colman would assume the role of Queen Elizabeth in the hit series, no other casting details have been announced.

Colman was awarded a Golden Globe for her supporting performance in the AMC miniseries "The Night Manager" earlier this year and, according to Entertainment Weekly, will appear in the upcoming "Murder on the Orient Express."

Deadline reported that Foy is not new to royalty, having previously played the role of Queen Elizabeth's mother in the film "Hyde Park on Hudson."
