Oldest Newlyweds in World? Groom, 102, and Bride, 91, May Set Record

Doreen Luckie, 91, and George Kirby, 102, could become the oldest newlyweds in the world when they marry in June.

The British soon-to-be newlyweds may break the current Guinness World Record for oldest couple to marry held by Francois Fernandez and Madeline Francineau of France, whose combined age was 190 years, 126 days when they wed in 2002.

California couple Lillian Hartley and Allan Marks were said to have a combined age of more than 193 years when they married in 2012, but the couple didn’t submit a form application.

Kirby will turn 103 on his June 13 wedding day, giving the couple a combined age of more than 194, Metro UK reported.

Kirby and Luckie have been together for 27 years.

Luckie told the Metro UK that she was surprised to hear they may hold a world record.

“I didn’t think that was possible, because you hear so many people living into their hundreds now, and lots of people in their nineties, I thought ‘well, we can’t be the only ones,’” she said.

The couple have been living together since 1988 and decided to marry because of pressure from their children, according to the Daily Express. Kirby proposed on Valentine’s Day.

“I suppose it's about time, really. I definitely don't feel my age. Doreen keeps me young,” Kirby said, according to the Express. “I didn't get down on one knee, because I don't think I would have been able to get back up.”

They started dating after Kirby went through a divorce and Luckie was widowed. Between them, the couple have seven children, 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

"We've adopted Doreen as our mum and we're delighted that she's going to become a Kirby," Kirby’s son Neil told the Express.

Twitter users seemed delighted by the story.
