Officer Plays Piano for Burglary Victim, 93, to Cheer Him

A police officer went beyond the call of duty when he played the piano for a 93-year-old burglary victim, bringing a smile to the old man’s face with a polished re-rendition of his favorite classical composition by Chopin.

Two police officers were visiting the pensioner on a welfare call at his home in Mansfield, Nottingham on Sunday following a robbery when one of them noticed a piano with sheet music open on nocturne by Chopin, The Daily Mail reported.

The music piece happened to be one which the officer, whose name has not been mentioned, knew very well.

“One of his favourite Chopin pieces he said, a nocturne,” the officer said in a post to Facebook.

“I told him it was my late grandma's favourite too! I said I could play, so he invited me to play for him, which I did. It truly made me feel good about myself and the job I do.”

Music was not all that was shared that day.

The three men also exchanged stories and it emerged that the elderly man was a pilot who fought in the war.

Sadly, the officers also learned that he had lost his wife on Christmas Eve a few years ago, The Independent noted.

Needless to say, the visit was appreciated.

“He felt wanted and reassured,” the police officer said. “He was really pleased that we had checked in on him to see that he was ok.”

Loneliness among the elderly is a growing cause for concern, with recent studies revealing shocking figures.

According to researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, about 18 percent of seniors lived alone while 43 percent reported feeling lonely on a regular basis, AgingCare.com noted.

The study further revealed that people over the age of 60 who felt lonely saw a 45 percent increase in their risk of death while isolated elders also had a 59 percent greater risk of mental and physical decline than their more social counterparts.
