Officer Jeffrey Walker Flips on Other Philly Cops at Fed Trial

Jeffrey Walker, a former Philadelphia drug officer, testified in federal court on Tuesday that he and other officers often planted drugs on suspects, lied in court hearings and performed dozens of illegal searches.

Walker, a former member of Philadelphia's narcotics field unit, was the prosecutor's star witness in a corruption trial against six officers from the unit who have been charged with crossing the line while trying to keep drugs off the streets will enriching themselves, reported the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The newspaper said prosecutors hoped to strengthen their case against Officers Thomas Liciardello, Brian Reynolds, Perry Betts, Michael Spicer, Linwood Norman, and John Speiser by offering an inside view of the alleged corruption.

"We produced big jobs. They liked that," Walker told the court about the his Philadelphia police bosses, who he claimed looked the other way as long the drug unit wwas making headline-grabbing arrests and gave the department positive attention. "As for the bosses, it's nothing but a dog and pony show."

Walker, according to The Inquirer, told jurors that the unit would routinely beat drug suspects to take their money. He said officers would describe themselves as the unlawful officers in the movie "Training Day" and television series "The Shield."

"We used to joke, 'That's all Hollywood. This is real life. They ain't got nothing on us,'" Walker told the jurors.

In March, drug dealer turned high school basketball coach Robert Kushner testified he was stopped by Liciardello, Reynolds and Walker and had his car searched without a warrant and was arrested, reported Philadelphia magazine He said that while in jail, his home was raided and a safe with $80,000 in cash was missing.

"I thought I was part of an elaborate robbery scheme," Kushner told jurors. "I thought I was being robbed. They were yelling at me, cursing at me, very aggressive."

The magazine reported that Walker had pleaded guilty to related charges earlier and agreed testify during the current federal trial against his former officers.
