Billy Horschel may not have been able to hold on to the lead in the U.S. Open, but his octopus pants in the final round made a PGA fashion statement like no other since John Daly.
Horschel, one of the leaders in the early rounds of the U.S. Open after shooting a 67 on Friday, faded to a 74 in the closing round Sunday. That allowed him to finish tied for fourth (285) with Ernie Els and two other golfers.
But that is not what had the golf world buzzing on the final day. The blue slacks with Octopus prints proved to be eye-catching, even if it failed to cut a couple of strokes on the final 18 holes of play.

"Well here they are! The highly anticipated highly controversial. . . . Octopus pants! Great outfits all week by RLX! pic.twitter.com/UrQwSYWZkB," Horschel tweeted before the start of play, giving fans a preview of what he would be wearing during the U.S. Open, reported USA Today.
Golf Digest's Marty Hackel told Kate Stanton of UPI.com that while the octopus prints are unconventional, the pants were good natured, so why not.
"I love them not only because they're fun but because we're finally getting people to pay attention to what guys are wearing," Hackel said. "They're putting smiles on people's faces."
But in the world of usually boring golf fashion, it doesn't take much for a golfer to set himself or herself apart. Bleacher Report's Dylan MacNamara pointed out in 2010, golfers such as Daly, Jesper Parnevik, Ian Poulter and the late Payne Stewart, had a knack of waking up the normally conservative golf attire.

It was probably the reason that Horschel's fashion statement seems so refreshing in the heat of battle at the U.S. Open. The 26-year-old University of Florida graduate, who has been a pro since 2009, was competing in his first major.
Justin Rose won the tournament at one over par. Horschel and his octopus prints were just three strokes back.
