Oberlin College's cafeteria has been accused by its ultra liberal students of serving food that's not only poor quality but also culturally insensitive, politically incorrect and even racist.

Students were upset by the cafeteria's Vietnamese banh mi sandwich, its Chinese dish General Tso chicken and its sushi, said The Oberlin Review, the school's student newspaper.

"When you're cooking a country's dish for other people, including ones who have never tried the original dish before, you're also representing the meaning of the dish as well as its culture," said junior Tomoyo Joshi from Japan, charging that under-cooked rice and lack of fresh fish at the cafeteria's sushi bar was disrespectful.

"So if people not from that heritage take food, modify it and serve it as 'authentic,' it is appropriative," said Joshi.

Diep Nguyen, a student from Vietnam, called the cafeteria's attempt to serve the banh mi sandwich "ridiculous," saying that the right ingredients were not used.

"How could they just throw out something completely different and label it as another country's traditional food?" asked Nguyen.

Michile Gross, director of business operations and dining services at Oberlin, said the college and Bon Appétit, the food service management company contracted by institution, were simply trying to give students a variety of cultural dishes and did not mean to offend.

"Maybe what we should do is describe the dish for what it is as opposed to characterizing it with a specific name," said the misnamed Gross.

The students' complaints of culturally insensitive food were met with scorn in other places.

"The noted liberal arts school explores new frontiers in getting offended," wrote Robby Soave of the Daily Beast. "It's one thing to quietly gripe about the quality of dorm food (students have likely been doing that for centuries). It's quite another to accuse the dining room staff of stealing from Asian culture because they didn't prepare the General Tso's chicken with the correct sauce."
