Former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, are buying a new house – the same house they’ve been renting in a tony Washington, D.C., neighborhood since they left the White House for good in January.
The Obamas have reportedly purchased the eight-bedroom, nine-and-a-half-bath mansion for $8.1 million, according to The Washington Post.
This comes after the Obamas said that they planned to stay in the nation’s capital at least until their daughter, Sasha, is out of high school, The Associated Press reported.
"Given that President and Mrs. Obama will be in Washington for at least another two and a half years, it made sense for them to buy a home rather than continuing to rent property," spokesman Kevin Lewis said in a statement, according to the AP.
According to The Washington Post, the $8.1 million purchase gives the Obamas ownership of the second-most expensive mansion in their neighborhood – the same neighborhood where Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner live.
The home was previously owned by Bill Clinton’s press secretary Joe Lockhart and his wife, Giovanna, and it was last renovated in 2011, The Los Angeles Times noted.
The Obamas still own their Chicago home in the Hyde Park neighborhood, even though it’s not clear whether they plan to move back there in the future.
