Obama's Grammys PSA Takes a Stand Against Domestic Violence

President Barack Obama made a satellite appearance at the Grammys Sunday night to promote the message of the “It’s On Us” campaign, which works to reduce violence against women.

“Tonight we celebrate artists whose music and message helped shape our culture, and together we can change our culture for the better by ending violence against women and girls,” Obama told the Grammy audience. “Right now, nearly one in five women in America has been a victim of rape or attempted rape. And more than one in four women has experienced some form of domestic violence. It’s not okay and it has to stop.”

Acknowledging the power that artists have to change society, the president encouraged everyone in attendance, and their fans, to go to the It’s On Us website and sign a pledge to do what they can to stop sexual assault.

The goal, Obama said, is to create a culture “where violence isn’t tolerated, where survivors are supported, and where all our young people, men, and women, can go as far as their talents and their dreams will take them.”

Although many online had positive comments about the uplifting message regarding It’s On Us, some also commented about the ill-timed Grammy tweet that went out after Obama spoke.

Chris Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna, and has served probation and community service for the crime.

Many famous faces have stepped up to star in promotional ads for It's On Us, and many actors and singers have pushed the issue with their fans. After Obama spoke, the audience heard from a domestic violence survivor and Katy Perry sang “By the Grace of God.”
