WaPo's Milbank: Even WH Believes Obama Can Lose

By    |   Tuesday, 12 June 2012 09:49 AM EDT

June is turning into such a terrible month for President Barack Obama, that even the White House now quietly believes he will lose in November, according to Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank.

Calling it "Junius Horribilis” — a reference to Queen Elizabeth’s description of 1992, the year when three of her children’s marriages broke down and Windsor Castle caught fire, as her annus horribilis (horrible year) — Milbank points out that Commerce Secretary John Bryson’s series of auto accidents is just the latest bad news for the president.

“Job growth has stalled, the Democrats have been humiliated in Wisconsin, the attorney general is facing a contempt-of-Congress citation, talks with Pakistan have broken down, Bill Clinton is contradicting Obama, Mitt Romney is out-raising him, Democrats and Republicans alike are complaining about a ‘cascade’ of national-security leaks from his administration, and he is now on record as saying that the ‘private sector is doing fine,’” the columnist points out.

“In Washington, there is a creeping sense that the bottom has fallen out and that there may be no second term,” Milbank writes. “Privately, senior Obama advisers say they are no longer expecting much economic improvement before the election.”
