South Korea has condemned a simulated attack on its president’s offices in Seoul by North Korean President Kim Jong-Un and other officials.
The military drill was led by Kim and photos were published in the North Korean newspaper Rodong Sinmun showing the president’s Blue House as a target of the simulation, according to CNN.
North Korean state media KCNA reported Jong Un as saying, “Well done, the enemy troops will have no place to hide themselves, far from taking any counteraction,” CNN reported. A picture showed Jong Un laughing as the Blue House was set on fire.
South Korea’s reaction was swift and slammed the drill. “(We) view the drill from yesterday as a childish act to display that their system is undiminished, in response to our internal situation,” said South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Jeong Joon-hee.
“If the enemy conducts a provocation based on its rash judgment, we will strongly and firmly retaliate with a fatal blow against the North Korean leadership,” the South Korea defense ministry’s join chiefs of staff said, The Independent reported.
North Korea may be trying to take advantage of perceived weakness in South Korea as its parliament recently voted to impeach President Park Guen-hye because of a corruption scandal. Park was the first female president of North Korea.
Prime Minister Hwang-Kyo Ahn is serving as interim president. He held an emergency cabinet meeting after the drill became known and ordered the military to observe extra vigilance.
North Korea conducted its fifth nuclear test in September in defiance of the U.N. Security Council, which voted to impose stricter sanctions on the country.
