Charles Saatchi, husband of British celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, is under investigation after The Mirror published photos of Saatchi allegedly choking his wife at a London restaurant in the newspaper's Sunday People tabloid.

Metropolitan Police told The Mirror that even though Lawson never filed an official complaint, the photos have prompted their office to look into the matter.

"Officers from the Community Safety Unit at Westminster are aware of the Sunday People article," police told The Mirror. "Enquires are in hand to establish the facts of the incident."

Saatichi, a millionaire art collector and former advertiser, is reportedly shown grabbing Lawson around the neck on four different occasions, the Mirror reported. The alleged incident occurred at the restaurant Scott's in Mayfair.

Just after the couple finished eating, the alleged attack "could be clearly seen and heard by other customers and those passing by the restaurant in the busy street" and that "nobody intervened although the incident looked brutal," The Mirror reported.

Fans have taken to Twitter to voice their support for the Lawson.

"Really upset to read this. Get out now Nigella! No real man lays a finger on a woman," user Louise Cliffe wrote.

"Add Nigella Lawson's lizard-face husband to the list of people I'd like to beat with a stick," Scott Weinberg tweeted.

"The Whittakers ad with Nigella makes me a bit sad now," Vaughn Smith wrote on Twitter. "Poor Nigella. I love her. This series of photos made me so sad."

Nigella Lawson is an award-winning cook and best-selling author and is host of a television cooking show. She has starred in cooking shows in the England and the United States.

Nigella is the daughter of British politician Nigel Lawson. Her first husband, John Diamond, died of cancer in 2001. She has been married to Saatichi for 10 years, according to The Mirror.

Charles Saatchi opened one of the world's largest advertising agencies with his brother Maurice before he was forced out of Saatchi & Saatchi in 1995. He owns the Saatchi Art Gallery in London and has been married three times.
