The flu death of Nico Mallozzi, a 10-year-old boy from New Canaan, Connecticut, who was traveling in New York, is the first Connecticut child to die of complications from the flu this season.

Mallozzi, a hockey player, began feeling ill last week before a tournament in New York but wanted to be with the team, according to the Connecticut Post. Mallozzi did not compete in the tournament because he felt too sick. His parents decided to take him home, but rushed to the Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, New York, when he took a turn for the worse.

Malozzi was diagnosed with Influenza B in Buffalo, and the family tried again to return home on Sunday, but Mallozzi took another bad turn and they ended up at an another New York Hospital in the Catskills regions, where Mallozzi died of pneumonia, the Post reported.

Mallozzi’s brother Joey, 12, also was diagnosed with Influenza B and was hospitalized Monday night, the Post reported.

Schools in New Canaan were closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, but Mallozzi’s school held a gathering for parents and students to provide information and support.

Superintendent Bryan Luizzi said all schools in the district will get extra cleanings to try to stop the spread of the flu and asked parents to keep children home from school when they are sick, USA Today reported

The school and hockey team both put out statements about Mallozzi’s death and said his smile and spirited personality will be missed, USA Today reported.

A GoFundme page was set up for Mallozzi’s family and raised more than $137,000 in one day.
