Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios was forced to quit Wimbledon during his first round match early Monday after losing the first two sets against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, citing a hip injury from last month that is still bothering him.

Kyrgios said later that he knew he wasn’t in good enough shape after the injury to play at Wimbledon and that his doctor had advised him not to compete, the Daily Mail reported. But the 22-year-old had done so well at his previous Wimbledon appearances that he decided to try anyway.

Kyrgios had been ranked No. 20 in the world going into the tournament after losing in the second round in both the Australian and French Opens earlier this year.

Wimbledon is his favorite tournament and he didn’t want to miss the chance to compete, The Guardian reported.

“I kind of knew I was in trouble,” Kyrgios said, according to the Daily Mail. “I have been feeling my hip ever since I fell over at Queen’s [Club].”

“I was doing everything I could to help it, but just not enough time,” he continued.

Kyrgios will probably have a scan this week to look at whether playing at Wimbledon aggravated the injury.

“Probably get an MRI tomorrow,” he said, according to the Mail. “Hopefully an injection or something, do rehab, and get healthy. I don’t think anyone wants to go down the surgery route. ... I would do everything possible to avoid it.”

Fans were supportive and hoped he would get better soon.
