Nick Kyrgios was fined on Thursday by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) after he made an "insulting remark" toward Stan Wawrinka during a match that was picked up by a courtside microphone.

"Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that, mate," Kyrgios allegedly said, referring to Australian player Thanasi Kokkinakis.

According to ESPN, the rulebook allows for a fine of up to $10,000 for verbal abuse and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Wawrinka condemned the comment in a Twitter post on Thursday, saying, "What was said I wouldn't say to my worst enemy. To stoop so low is not only unacceptable but also beyond belief."

"So disappointing to see a fellow athlete and colleague be so disrespectful in a way I could never even imagine," he continued. "There is no need for this kind of behavior on or off the court and I hope the governing body of this sport does not stand for this and stands up for the integrity of the sport that we have worked so hard to build."

The Swiss player has recently been linked to 19-year-old Donna Vekic of Croatia, who is ranked 127th.

Vekic played mixed doubles with Kokkinakis at the 2014 Australian Open.

Kyrgios suggested in a post-match interview that Wawrinka provoked him into making the comments.

"He was getting a bit lippy at me so, I don't know, it's just in-the-moment sort of stuff,'' Kyrgios said. "I don't really know, I just said it.''

Kyrgios, 20, beat Wawrinka, 30, in the match after the latter retired with a back injury.

"Nick's young and maybe doesn't realize what he is doing sometimes," Rod Laver, who completed the Grand Slam twice in the 1960s, told The Associated Press. "He's playing with emotion ... that's certainly something that he needs to grow out of and he needs to grow out of that sooner rather than later.."

The flap prompted Australian swimmer Dawn Fraser to suggest that her compatriot head back to wherever his parents are from.

Kyrgios, born to Greek and Malaysian parents, replied that Fraser was a "blatant racist," and she soon apologized.
