New Jersey Home Invasion: Brutal Assault Captured on Nanny Cam (Video)

By    |   Wednesday, 26 June 2013 09:17 AM EDT

A North Jersey woman and her 3-year-old daughter were watching cartoons in their living room Friday morning when all of a sudden a 5-foot-11, 210-pound man bursts into the room, lunging and swinging at her head.

The intruder punched her in the face over and over again, kicked her in the head, threw her to the floor, and put her in a headlock as the 3-year-old watched, cowering helplessly. The home invasion suspect then threw her like a rag doll down the basement stairs, according to NJ.com.

The brutal assault was captured on a nanny camera that was perched on a mantel. As the woman lay nearly unconscious, the hefty man ransacked the house, stealing an undetermined amount of jewelry from the house in Millburn. The woman's 18-month-old child was asleep upstairs throughout the assault, Capt. Michael Palardy said.

Millburn police Tuesday released the graphic video captured from a hidden surveillance camera, in hopes of identifying the suspect, offering a $5,000 reward by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office for information leading to an arrest.

The violent assault and robbery has shocked the quiet, upper-middle class community.

"People come here because it’s a safe town," Capt. Michael Palardy, a veteran officer on the Millburn Police Department, who told NJ.com he can’t even remember the last home invasion.

The video shows the intruder making three trips upstairs to rifle through the family’s belongings, as the intruder continuously beat her in between trips and the woman struggled to gather the strength to get up.

“Her love for the children kept her going,” Palardy told the New York Daily News of the brave mom, who suffered chipped teeth, a concussion and had her face stitched up. “Their world’s turned upside down right now."

Around 10:30 a.m., the victim heard a loud crash – her backdoor being kicked down – and she went to investigate. He then came into view of the camera and immediately started pummeling her as the daughter lies terrified, inches away from the beating on the couch. The little girl and her 18-month-old sibling was not harmed through the incident.

In one version of the tape, which includes the audio of the incident, the suspect can be heard asking the woman "Where your pocketbook at?" as she moans, according to the Daily News.

"I knew that if I started screaming, my daughter would, too, and I was afraid she would get hurt," the young mother told News 12. "I took it. I didn't cry the entire time."

“He’s a lefty, every punch and kick was lefty,” Palardy said of the suspect. “He believed no one was home, and when he came across someone, his reactions were violent. “There was no reason for it, she would have given him anything he wanted."
