New dictionary words on the internet database Dictionary.com cover the political area – such as "alt-right" and "Black Lives Matter" – to the humorous, like "dad bod" and "man bun."

Dictionary.com announced that it has added 300 new words, defining a variety of slang terms and mashups of terms, such as friendiversary (the anniversary of a friendship) that create new words.

Dictionary.com lexicographer Jane Solomon told CNN that adding words to its database is serious business, often driven by people attempting to find consistent definitions of these words through searches.

"We also have lookup data," Solomon told CNN. "We can see what words people have tried to look up on Dictionary.com that haven't led to a definition. … It takes a lot of time and effort and thought, so as a lexicographer we give every word the same amount of respect and attention and care."

Dictionary.com said on its website that new words reflect an update on how people are using words in everyday life.

"English is constantly changing and growing," Dictionary.com said on its website. "Thanks to the diverse people who speak it and the times they (we) live in, new words enter the language all the time. The dictionary's job is to reflect and celebrate that evolution. It's genuinely exciting to introduce new words as long term parts of the way we speak."

Some of the new words approved by Dictionary.com include the following:

Alt-right: A political movement originating on social media and online forums, composed of a segment of conservatives who support extreme right-wing ideologies, including white nationalism and anti-Semitism.

Black Lives Matter: A political and social movement originating among African-Americans, emphasizing basic human rights and racial equality for black people and campaigning against various forms of racism.

Burkini: The proprietary name of a type of bathing suit covering the torso, limbs, and head, worn by women or girls who want to keep their bodies completely covered, especially for religious reasons.

Dad bod: A man's physique that is slightly overweight or flabby but still attractive.

Man bun: A man's hair gathered into a bun at the back or top of the head.

Mic drop: The act of intentionally dropping one's microphone at the end of a speech or performance, displaying a bold confidence that it has been very impressive or cannot be topped.

Slay: To strongly impress or overwhelm someone.

Throw shade: To insult, criticize, or disrespect a person or thing in an indirect, artful manner.
