Nelson Mandela's 24-year-old grandson, Mbuso Mandela, has been arrested after being accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in a Johannesburg restaurant toilet.

Mbuso Mandela appeared in Johannesburg Magistrate Court on Monday during a brief hearing in which prosecutor Thando Hopa told the court about the rape allegation, reported The Star in South Africa.

"At this stage, the matter has been taken for judicial determination, and the National Prosecuting Authority will comment further," Brigadier Mashadi Selepe told The Star. "The investigation by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit continues."

The alleged victim's family charged that the girl was at the restaurant on in the Greenside area of Johannesburg with friends Aug. 7 when she was attacked in a toilet, said The Star.

Mbuso Mandela's famous grandmother, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, allegedly tried to intercede in the investigation, a spokesman for the girl's family told The Daily Sun.

The spokesman said Madikizela-Mandela first asked the girl's father to hold off on filing charges while her family had "time to deal with the issue."

"Instead, Winnie's bodyguard went to the family pretending to be a cop," the spokesman told The Daily Sun. "The father was told there was no need to arrest the suspect but when the father asked to see his badge, he didn't have one. It turned out he had been sent by Winnie."

The spokesman said the family was angered by the alleged intervention.

"Just because they have a famous surname, they think they can get away with crime," said the spokesman. "Children can't just be raped and then everything is alright. The girl is young and doesn't even drink."

Nelson Mandela died in 2013 at 95. The South African anti-apartheid activist spent 27 years in prison for treason. He went on to become the country's first black president in 1994 after the fall of apartheid and white-minority rule.

Mandela had 17 grandchildren. The eldest, Mandla Mandela, was convicted earlier this year for assaulting a 40-year-old driver connected with a road-rage incident, reported The Guardian.
