Nelson Mandela Dies: Internet Mourns Beloved South African Leader

Nelson Mandela, who bore the scars of a brutal fight against apartheid and inequality and was South Africa’s first black president and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, has died at age 95.

As the world learned of his death and began to mourn, the Internet and news channels were filled with stories of Mandela’s life.

“His image is as the world’s saint. The truth is, he’s a saintly man, but he’s also a very tough and shrewd politician,” Bill Clinton said in a clip on Mandela playing on ABC News.

Although world leaders spoke out about Mandela, his true legacy came in the thousands of online posts made by the people who aren’t famous, but felt the impact of the changes Mandela fought for.

Talking Points Memo reprinted a statement from former President George H.W. Bush after Mandela’s death. “President Mandela was one of the great forces for freedom and equality of our time. He bore his burdens with dignity and grace, and our world is better off because of his example,” the statement said. “This good man will be missed, but his contributions will live on forever.
