A Naval Criminal Investigative Service agent who had an ongoing affair with a Syrian terror suspect was arrested on Friday and charged with federal obstruction to justice, The Washington Post reported.

Special agent Leatrice Malika De Bruhl-Daniels reportedly became romantically involved with Nadal Diya, a Syrian national attempting to get a tourist visa to the U.S., despite warnings from the U.S. State Department and Department of Homeland Security to “stay away.”

Bruhl-Daniels was working at the U.S. Consulate in Dubai in 2016, when she met Diya, who was the subject of a counterterrorism investigation, according to an affidavit from an FBI special, CNN reported.

After numerous attempts to gain information pertaining to the investigations surrounding Diya, Bruhl-Daniels reportedly was put in touch with a Homeland Security Investigations officer in Houston.

She reportedly coaxed the agent to disclose information surrounding the probe under the pretense that she wanted to aide investigations.

According to CNN, the HIS agent did not disclose information relating to the investigation but told Bruhl-Daniel that Diya was the subject of ongoing criminal investigations and advised that she stay away from him.

Bruhl-Daniel relayed the information back to Diya in emails that also professed strong feelings for him, CNN said.

She reportedly reassured Diya that she would “still fight for your visa situation as much as I can,” but later advised he get a lawyer after she spoke with investigators.

“I gave them no more than what I could to emphasize your innocence,” she wrote to Diya, according to CNN.

The intrigue came to light in April 2018, when Bruhl-Daniels was relocated to Hawaii under a new assignment that was cancelled due to security clearance issues.

She disclosed information to NCIS officials about her relationship with Diya in May, after enquiring about the cancellation of her assignment.

A warrant for Bruhl-Daniels' arrest was issued Friday and she was apprehended without incident in Alexandria, Virginia.
