One person had a broken leg and another a broken ankle, the AP said.
Thirteen people were taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and seven to Brunswick Novant Medical Center in Supply, N.C. One was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.
Ocean Isle Mayor Debbie Smith said that while more stringent building standards would be desirable, towns in the state are not allowed to exceed state requirements, the AP reported.
Commenters at PilotOnline.com questioned if more regulation would help, saying a higher dose of common sense could have prevented the problem.
“And consider this, Mayor Smith, no matter what the codes require, you can't regulate common sense. Likely those 25 were not all thinking clearly and were packed like sardines on that deck,” milepost13 wrote. “But, then, they were on vacation. They shouldn't have to think, right?”
“25 clowns on a deck??! 4,000 to 5,000 pounds isn't what I'd figure a deck is rated for,” said Notdarkyet.
