#NationalSandwichDay is trending online Thursday as sandwich companies and their fans celebrate the sub, hero, hoagie, and other sandwiches.

Sandwiches were named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, after he supposedly invented them in the 18th century.

"While the modern sandwich is believed to be named after John Montagu, the exact circumstances of its invention and original use are the subject of debate," said the National  Day Calendar website. "There is a rumor in a contemporary travel book titled Tour to London by Pierre Jean Grosley, that formed the popular myth that bread and meat sustained Lord Sandwich at the gambling table.

"It is said that Lord Sandwich was a very conversant gambler and did not take the time to have a meal during his long hours playing at the card table. When hungry, he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread. This practice was a habit which was well known to his gambling friends who soon began to order 'the same as Sandwich,' and from this, the sandwich was born," the website continued.

For National Sandwich Day, Subway restaurants around the country are offering free subs when customers purchase any sub and drink, according to NJ.com. The company is also donating a sub to food bank Feeding America for every sub it gives away.

McAlister's Deli has reduced the cost of its sandwiches to $4 all day long at all of its chains. Quiznos, another national sandwich shop, is giving away free gift cards and other items, reported NJ.com.

"Today, we come together to celebrate what is quite possibly nature's most perfect food," wrote Indianapolis Star writer Allison Carter, who stated that Penn Station East Coast Subs had a buy-one-get-one-free sub special Thursday. "And there is no better way to celebrate that than to eat cheap sandwiches."

There were various takes on National Sandwich Day on social media.
