The space agency, which regularly posts breathtaking photos from space, can easily share many of its stories through that visual medium, which is exactly what Instagram does so well.

“We're constantly looking to expand our social media portfolio to include tools that will best tell NASA's story of exploration and discovery," said NASA Press Secretary Lauren Worley in a news release. “Instagram has a passionate following of users who are hungry for new and exciting photos. We believe we have some of the most engaging images on and off the planet — and we can’t wait to engage with Instagrammers.”

NASA’s new account, found at www.instagram.com/nasa, will take off with the launch of the agency’s Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) Friday. That robotic mission is orbiting the moon to gather information about structure and composition of the lunar atmosphere and determine whether dust is being lofted into the lunar sky, the release said.

Instagram will feature the event with historic moon images and real-time photos from the launch complex.

NASA’s Twitter account, @NASA, has almost 5 million followers, which puts it at No. 1 among federal agencies.

Posts on the account run the gamut from gorgeous space photos to new discoveries and research. For instance, a recent video walked viewers through how the International Space Station’s Firestation will explore the tops of thunderstorms and hopefully teach scientists more about electrical events that occur during storms.
