A Muslim basketball player shooting hoops during the national anthem has been kicked off the Garden City Community College team in Kansas.

The incident took place on Nov. 1 when Rasool Samir was practicing shooting during the playing of the "Star-Spangled Banner" and was then confronted by school booster Jim Howard, the International Business Times reported.

An altercation ensued and, according to The Kansas City Star, the two had to be separated by a campus police officer.

Samir was escorted off the court but Howard was allowed to return to his seat.

The following day Samir was told by basketball coach Brady Trenkle that he was no longer on the team.

After losing his athletic scholarship, Samir withdrew from classes and was un-enrolled from the college, Lauren Bonds, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas said, per The Chicago Tribune.

Samir has since returned to his home in Philadelphia.

The ACLU said the 19-year-old former student chose not to participate in the anthem due to religious reasons.

Samir had previously apologized for his actions, saying he did not “mean any disrespect at all to the fans or the flag at last night’s game,” the Garden City Telegram reported.

“I am truly sorry to anyone that felt disrespected, and I am also sorry to the school. I apologize for what happened,” he said.

Since the incident, the school has released various reports, initially claiming that Samir had left the team on his own accord but later saying he was removed from the team for violating team rules.

Kristy Temple, the director of public relations for Garden City Community College, said via KWCH, “the Garden City Community College administration, faculty and staff take seriously the honor of the National Anthem and the safety of our students and spectators.”
