'Crazy Crackers on the Right' Rant Has MSNBC's Karen Finney Under Fire

By    |   Wednesday, 30 January 2013 03:53 PM

MSNBC Contributor Karen Finney used a racial slur to describe Southern whites during a rant about why Republicans need to be more inclusive in future campaigns.

The former Democratic National Convention communications director made the comment, almost a minute long, during a Tuesday MSNBC broadcast of “NOW w/Alex Wagner.”

"We saw in droves the Latino community moving over to the Democratic Party largely because of the tone," she said. "And you had even Republicans in the Republican Party who were Latino [were] just disgusted with the tone. So these have to be very, very careful and I think that the others things that these guys know is that those crazy crackers on the right — if they start with their very hateful language — that is going to kill them in the same way that they learned, at their little retreat, let’s not talk about rape."

Later that day, Finney apologized for her remark on Twitter, claiming it was not meant to be a racial epithet.

"Apologize if anyone offended — not meant as racial, alliteration like coo-coo crazy, or cracked, crack pots," she wrote.

Finney has a history of infusing race into her political discourse.

During the 2012 Republican presidential primary, Finney suggested that Republicans would take issue with candidate hopeful Herman Cain because of sexual harassment allegations against him that came from a white woman.

Finney also railed conservative commentators like Rush Limbaugh, alleging he implied the tragic Florida shooting death of 17-year-old African-American Trayvon Martin was racially motivated.

"Left unchecked or unchallenged, our biases, bigotry and stereotypes take over our better judgment," she said last year. "(When) Rush Limbaugh calls a presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama, a magic negro, the effect is dangerous, because they reinforce and validate old stereotypes. In the case of Trayvon, those festering stereotypes had lethal consequences."

In addition to providing commentary on MSNBC, Finney is also columnist for The Hill and contributor to Politico and The Huffington Post.
