Mount Kinabalu Tourists Arrested for Taking Nude Photos on Holy Land

Four Mount Kinabalu tourists were arrested Tuesday after taking nude photographs on the sacred Malaysian mountain days before an earthquake killed 18 climbers.

Police obtained a court order to hold the visitors for four days and charge them for indecent behavior, police commissioner Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman told Agence France-Presse via The Telegraph.

A 24-year-old British woman was detained at an airport in Sabah while two Canadian siblings and a Dutch man turned themselves into Sabah police the same day. The four Westerners are believed to be a part of a group of 10 who undressed on the UNESCO World Heritage site May 30 as a part of a growing Internet trend where nude photos are taken at famous locations, according to The Telegraph.

“We detained all four of them on Tuesday . . . and yes we are still searching for the other six tourists, and we will catch them,” the police chief told The Telegraph.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake then shook the mountain on Friday, trapping more than 100 climbers, injuring dozens, and killing 18, including seven children.

When the photos of the Westerners went viral, locals expressed outrage, believing the indecency had caused the mountain’s protectors, known as “aki,” to become angry, The Telegraph reported.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan blamed the deadly earthquake on the foreigners for showing “disrespect to the sacred mountain." He said a special ritual will be conducted soon to “appease the mountain spirit," the U.K. newspaper noted.

Four women and six men reportedly split from a guided tour and went to the mountain’s south peak. They ignored their leader’s request to stop stripping for the picture.

The parks director told the Malaysian newspaper The Star via The Telegraph that the tourists called their guide “stupid” and instructed him to “go to hell.”

Some allegedly urinated on the mountain as well, BBC News noted.

The crew appeared in court Wednesday and will be held until Saturday as an investigation continues.

“I have got every faith in [Malaysia's] judicial system. I just hope they don't make an example of them,” Tim Hawkins, father of the British tourist Eleanor Hawkins, told The Guardian.

Mountain guides have now been clearly instructed to tell tourists that nudity is prohibited on the mountain.
