A mother-daughter murder-suicide may have been staged in July and is receiving a second look in Virginia where authorities believe it may have been a double murder, WUSA-TV reported.

Police first believed that Helen Hargan, 23, one of Pamela Hargan's three daughters, shot and killed her mother, 63, before turning the gun on herself on July 14 in McLean, Virginia, WTVR-TV reported. In recently unsealed warrants, Fairfax police issued a second search warrant seven days later, WUSA-TV said.

One detective wrote that the police's "investigation has revealed that the scene may have been altered and staged by the suspect," WUSA-TV reported.

Authorities said in the warrant that Megan Hargan, a second daughter living in the McLean, Virginia, home, allegedly attempted fraudulent wire transfers from a financial account belong to her mother the day before the murder and the day of her death, WUSA-TV said.

Police said Megan Hargan lived in the home with her younger daughter with the other family members, per WUSA-TV.

In a twist reported in July, it was the boyfriend of one of Pamela Hargan's daughters, who lives in Dallas, who initially contacted police about the shooting, WUSA-TV reported then. Media reports did not identify who the Dallas man was dating but said she lived in the Hargan home.

"Caller is third party, says his girlfriend called him and advised that her sister (Helen) killed her mother," a dispatcher for Fairfax County Police said, WUSA-TV wrote in July. "Caller lives in Dallas, Texas, and the girlfriend lives out of address 6708 Dean Drive. No one's answering the phone."

Authorities said no suspects have been named in the incident but the case remained "very active," WUSA-TV wrote.

The Washington Post reported that Pamela Hargan had worked for aerospace contractor Lockheed Martin for about 25 years and more recently worked for SAIC, another large government contractor.

The newspaper said Hargan had moved into her McLean home about two years ago.
