A mother diagnosed with cancer skipped treatment for a tumor growing on her left kidney until she was able to deliver a healthy baby girl. Weeks later she went ahead with surgery that probably saved her life.

Jessica Dykstra opted not to have surgery for the cancerous tumor until her child was born, fearing that the surgery would be harmful to the unborn baby, CBS News reported on Monday.

Dykstra had told her husband Nate that she didn’t "feel right" about doing the surgery. After consulting with the Cleveland Clinic and weighing their options, the couple went through with their decision not to seek treatment, CBS News said.

About five weeks after Jessica Dykstra gave birth to the couple's third child, a daughter they named Hope, she had surgery at the Cleveland Clinic where Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber removed the cancerous tumor was able to save about 80 percent of her kidney in a partial nephrectomy.

"Her prognosis is excellent given that the whole tumor was removed, and this time, there is no sign of having any cancer left inside," Haber told CBS News.

The Dykstras' story ended differently from Carrie DeKlyen, who died in September after refusing cancer treatments so she could give birth to her sixth child, the Detroit News reported.

Physicians removed DeKlyen's feeding and breathing tubes a day after she gave birth to her daughter Life Lynn DeKlyen.

Carrie DeKlyen decided not to go through chemotherapy to treat her brain cancer since it would have meant ending her pregnancy, the News said. The newspaper said that Life Lynn was born prematurely but was doing well after birth.

"When she came back to ICU after the baby was delivered, I leaned over and whispered in her ear, 'I love you. I am proud of you. You did what you set out to do,'" Nick DeKlyen told the News.

"It's bittersweet," DeKlyen told newspaper. "God gave us life but my wife is going to die. We chose to save the baby over my wife. It's painful. I feel like my heart is torn out of my chest because it's about as bittersweet as you can get."
