The Mosul operation for liberation from ISIS has begun in Iraq, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced Monday.

The announcement had been heavily anticipated following the horrific acts of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants. If all goes as planned, the operation — the largest of its kind since the U.S. withdrew in 2011 — could be the biggest blow ISIS has experienced thus far, CBS News reported.

Mosul, home to more than a million people, became victim to ISIS fighters in early summer 2014 after an attack that left nearly a third of Iraq in the hands of the terrorist group’s militants.

"I am extremely concerned for the safety of up to 1.5 million people living in Mosul who may be impacted by military operations to retake the city from ISIL," said Stephen O’Brien, U.N. deputy secretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, Agence France-Presse reported according to CBS News. "Families are at extreme risk of being caught in cross-fire or targeted by snipers."

By early Monday, hundreds of soldiers were advancing to Mosul.

There are tens of thousands of Iraqi troops involved in the effort to retake Mosul including "the peshmerga, Sunni tribal fighters, army troops, police officers, Shiite militias and elite counterterrorism units," The Washington Post reported. Additionally, the United states is providing sky and ground support.

Mosul, which is located about 250 miles north of Baghdad, is the last ISIS stronghold in the country.

"We will soon meet in Mosul to celebrate in liberation and your salvation," Abadi told the city's residents, the Post reported. "We will rebuild what has been destroyed by this criminal gang."
