Montebello Mayor's Husband Charged With Selling Meth Near School

The husband of Montebello, Calif., mayor Christina Cortez is scheduled to appear in court Monday to face charges that he allegedly sold methamphetamine near a school.

Ruben Guerrero, 44, was arrested Thursday and released on bail Friday. Cortez told the Los Angeles Times that she was "very disappointed and, like everyone else, shocked" to hear the news about her husband, and urged people to "let this investigation take its course."

Police said Guerrero had been seen selling illegal drugs near Montebello Intermediate School, close to the couple's home on Los Angeles Ave. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told the paper that Guerrero had been observed selling drugs on previous occasions.

Authorities believe Guerrero was using the family home as a base of operation. Mayor Cortez was at home with the couple's children when deputies served her with a search warrant, she told the Times. Police also searched Cortez's 89-year-old grandmother's house.

Guerrero has had earlier brushes with police. He was convicted of drunk driving in November 1999. Earlier this year, Montebello Councilman Frank Gomez sought a restraining order against him, claiming that Guerrero had threatened him twice with violence, once by phone and a second time at a recent council meeting. Court records show that the order was denied, according to the Whittier Daily News.

Whatever the outcome of the arrest, Cortez, who took office in 2010, told reporters that her position on drugs remains the same.

"As a mother, as a daughter and as an elected official, I have supported the education of understanding the dangers of drugs. [Thursday's] events will not change that," she told the Times.
