Art experts may have discovered a Mona Lisa nude sketch.

Curators from the Louvre Museum in Paris believe a charcoal portrait of a nude woman that, for more than 150 years has been kept in another art collection, could very well have been a sketch for the Mona Lisa.

The piece of art was previously believed to have been the work of Leonardo da Vinci’s students but experts are now running tests to establish whether the sketch could “at least in part” be by the famous artist himself, the BBC reported.

“The drawing has a quality in the way the face and hands are rendered that is truly remarkable. It is not a pale copy,” curator Mathieu Deldicque told AFP, according to the BBC.

He explained they were “looking at something which was worked on in parallel with the Mona Lisa at the end of Leonardo’s life,” adding that it was “almost certainly a preparatory work for an oil painting.”

Louvre conservation expert Bruno Mottin dated the drawings back to da Vinci's lifetime at the turn of the 15th century, however he said it would take time before it could be established whether da Vinci was indeed responsible for the sketch, the Daily Mail reported.

“The hatching on the top of the drawing near the head was done by a right-handed person,” he said, according to the Daily Mail, pointing out da Vinci was left handed.

Mottin said he hoped experts could identify the artist in time for a special exhibition to be held at Chantilly in two years, which will celebrate the 500th anniversary of da Vinci's death.
