Mom Left Son in Woods: Quadriplegic Man Survived 5 Days, Police Say

A mom who allegedly left her 21-year-old quadriplegic son in the woods for five days, alone in cold and rainy weather, so she could visit her out-of-state boyfriend will face charges.

The son, who was not identified, has cerebral palsy and cannot speak. A man walking through the woods Friday in Philadelphia discovered the victim and called police.

The Chicago Tribune said the victim was “lying in leaves and covered with a blanket,” and nearby were a wheelchair and a Bible.

"This kid is obviously a fighter," Lt. John Walker told the Tribune, adding that the situation was heartbreaking. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for dehydration and a cut on his back.

Nyia Parler, 41, the man’s mother, was hospitalized in Maryland shortly after her son was found in the woods Friday, The Associated Press reported. It is unclear why she was hospitalized and Philadelphia police plan to arrest her once she is released.

The victim was found just around the corner from his home by someone who saw the wheelchair and went to look. Parler had told relatives she was taking her son with her to Maryland.

"She pushes him about 150 yards from the highway into the wooded area, takes him out of wheelchair, lays him on the ground, puts a blanket over him and leaves a Bible with him, and then just walks away," Walker told the AP on Saturday. "It's only by the grace of God that he survived this."

Parler also has a 16-year-old son who is staying with relatives.

Parler’s boyfriend, who was not identified, told NBC Washington he turned Parler in because it was the right thing to do. Maryland police have charged the woman with reckless endangerment, aggravated and simple assault, neglect of a care-dependent person, unlawful restraint, kidnapping, and false imprisonment, the station said.

Philadelphia police will extradite Parler once she is out of the hospital.
