The missing plane of Italian fashion mogul Vittorio Missoni has been found off Venezuela under water north of the Los Roques islands in the Caribbean, officials announced this week.

The aircraft had been missing since Jan. 4, with Missoni, 58, his wife, their friends Elda Scalvenzi and Guido Foresti, and two pilots on board.

Venezuelan interior ministry spokesman Jorge Galindo wrote on Twitter that Missoni's plane was located under 230 feet of water.

The last radar report showed the aircraft, a BN-2 Islander, rapidly losing altitude and speed about 10 miles from the Los Roques airport, veering to the right until the plane disappeared from the radar, BBC News reported.

The ship Deep Sea discovered the wreckage in waters north of the Los Roques Archipelago this week. The plane has not been recovered and it was not known whether bodies were inside.

The families of the passengers released a joint statement this week obtained by the Huffington Post.

"The families thank the Venezuelan Government and the Italian Government for the effort in having made this search possible, and they are confident that the investigation will follow through to the ascertainment of the causes and the responsibility for the accident," the statement read.

Missoni is the eldest son of Italian fashion leader Ottavio Missoni and played a managerial role in the company. Ottavio Missoni died at 92 on May 9.

The Missoni fashion house is one of Italy's most famous fashion brands. Vittorio Missoni was in charge of marketing for U.S., Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and France.

The New York Times reported that Angela Missoni, the company's creative director, has taken a more visible role in the business since January. The business has not determined its management structure but will likely remain family controlled.
