The Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant will plunge ahead with the swimsuit portion of its contest despite the fact that Miss America has dropped the section completely on grounds that it will no longer judge contestants on their appearance.

Earlier this week the Miss America Organization announced the changes to its pageant, with the organization's head to the board of trustees, former Miss America Gretchen Carlson, announcing that they were "not going to judge you on your appearance" because they were "interested in what makes you you."

However, in Texas, the pageant, which serves as an official preliminary to the Miss America competition, will continue to have its contestants strut their stuff in heels and swimsuits.

Pageant spokeswoman Valerie Bell said the decision should have no impact on the Miss America pageant, adding that the swimsuit portion of Miss Texas did not make up a large part of the judging process, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Instead, she noted that the swimsuit section, known as "lifestyle and fitness," amounted to 10 percent of a contestant's score, compared with 30 percent for talent, 20 percent for on-stage question and 15 percent for evening wear.

The Miss Texas pageant was founded in 1937 and is the largest provider of scholarships to young women across the state, according to the official website.

The pageant operates within the guidelines set forth by the Miss America Organization "while stressing individuality, personal development, communication skills and physical fitness."

For years there have been calls for the swimsuit portion to be cut from the Miss America pageant and while the tradition continues in Texas, it will no longer feature in the national competition.

Instead, the organization said, each contestant will speak to judges and "highlight her achievements and goals in life and how she will use her talents, passion and ambition to perform the job of Miss America," The Associated Press reported.

Contestants will also be permitted to wear clothing other than a gown for the evening-wear portion of the competition.
