A knife attack by a Minnesota school student injured three other students Monday. The alleged attacker is an 8-year-old second grader.

The incident occurred at about 7:15 a.m. as students were arriving at Pleasantview Elementary School in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. Police said the 8-year-old student brought a kitchen knife to school and randomly slashed fellow students, The Associated Press reported. The three victims — ages 8, 9 and13 — all received “superficial wounds,” requiring stitches.

The event occurred in a school hallway and lasted approximately five minutes, the AP reported.

School Superintendent Bruce Watkins told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that after the second-grader put his backpack away, he began stabbing the other students.

After bringing the situation under control, school authorities called police and an ambulance service, the AP said.

The alleged attacker was released to his parents after police interviewed him.

The event comes two months after Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, opened fire in a hallway in the Parkland, Florida, school, killing 17 students and staff members.
