Minnesota Police Officer Tom Decker Killed in Apparent Ambush

By    |   Friday, 30 Nov 2012 04:01 PM

A Minnesota police officer was killed late Thursday in an apparent ambush.
Officer Tom Decker, 31, a six-year veteran of the Cold Spring police force, was responding to a report of a suicidal man when he was shot twice after getting out of his squad car to approach an apartment building behind a bar. He died at the scene.

Ryan Michael Larson, 34, was being held Friday while the state’s attorney was considering criminal charges.

Though police had Larson in custody they continued to search the area of the shooting with police dogs. Reporters were told police were looking for a sawed-off shotgun.

Decker has a wife and four children aged 8, 7, 6 and 5.

"He was a hometown boy," Cold Spring Police Chief Phil Jones said told reporters. "Not only did I have no problems with him, but he was the type of officer who accumulated six letters of appreciation and commendation in six years with us. We lost an officer, the community lost a citizen.” Jones also described Decker as the “department jokester” on the force of eight full-time officers.

“Cold Springs Police Officer Tom Decker was senselessly murdered last night, while acting in the line of duty," said Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton in a statement. "On behalf of the people of Minnesota, I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and to the Cold Springs Police Department for their tragic loss of an outstanding officer, father and friend. Officer Decker died, while protecting his fellow citizens. For his heroism, we will be forever grateful."
