A Mike Rowe doppelganger allegedly robbed a bank in Medford, Oregon, on Monday, causing a social media stir that ultimately prompted the host of CNN's "Somebody's Gotta Do It" to chime in.
Medford Police posted photos of the suspected bank robber to its Facebook page Monday after the city's Chase Bank on East Stewart Avenue was hit.
Rowe's name quickly came up jokingly on social media as a suspect.
"That totally looks like Mike Rowe," Facebook user Rachel Rawlins commented on Tuesday. "Celebrity's (sic) gone wild."
Medford Police got enough Rowe references that the department posted a new Facebook message Tuesday, referencing the reality show star and his former program "Dirty Jobs."
"Good morning folks. First off, we appreciate all the tips on the bank robbery from yesterday. In fact, thanks to you guys, we issued an arrest warrant for Mike Rowe from the TV show 'Dirty Jobs.' Just kidding Mike Rowe! Keep your eye out for the real robber and keep the tips coming," the
Medford Police Facebook post read.
Rowe himself eventually weighed in with his own Facebook message Wednesday, offering an alibi and pointing out that the robber could have been disguised with a clever "Mike Rowe" mask.
"Point is, if this crook was disguised as me, he could still be in Medford, walking among you," Rowe said on Facebook. "In which case the public should NOT be on the lookout for me, but rather, a much skinnier and far less attractive man about six inches shorter, probably wearing a shirt and tie. Thanks, and good luck. Please let me know what happens next . . . P.S. For what it's worth, I was in Kansas Monday, and can prove it, if need be."
Rowe has hosted "Somebody's Gotta Do It" on CNN for three seasons. Before that, he was the host of the Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs" from 2005 to 2012.
