One of Mike Pence's Secret Service agents allegedly solicited a prostitute and has now been placed on administrative leave after his arrest.

The suspected incident happened last week in Montgomery County, Maryland, when a hotel there called police about suspicious activity happening in one of its rooms, ABC News reported.

Authorities reportedly saw the agent, who was off duty at the time, leave the hotel and was eventually arrested, the source told ABC News. A source told CNN that the agent self-reported his arrest to the Secret Service.

A Secret Service representative told CNN that the alleged incident is under investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility to determine the facts. The agent had to surrender his weapon and official Secret Service gear during the suspension.

"The Secret Service takes allegations of criminal activity very seriously," A Secret Service spokesman said in a statement, according to The Washington Post. "The Secret Service is committed to ensuring that all employees are held to the highest level of professional and ethical standards of conduct."

The alleged incident harkened back to past Secret Service incidents that led to Congressional hearing and investigations into the agency, according to the Post. An April 2012 incident in Cartagena, Colombia, charged that agents were involved in heavy drinking and prostitutes during a presidential trip to the country.

In that incident, about a dozen agents were sent home for misconduct, noted the Post. USA Today reported that eight Secret Service agents were eventually fired over the incident that reportedly involved 20 prostitutes.

USA Today wrote that the Secret Service was formed in 1865 was to prevent the production of counterfeit money, but now protects the nation's leaders and the financial and critical infrastructure of the country.
