"Mike and Mike's" final show on ESPN and ESPN Radio on Friday was greeted with warm feelings by celebrities and fans on social media.

Sportscaster Mike Greenberg and former NFL star Mike Golic have been on the airways for 18 years and their morning show was seen as one of the network's signs of stability through layoffs and controversies, the New York Post reported.

Rumors about a deteriorating relationship between the two became public in the spring, but both hosts have denied it, the Post said. Then news broke in the summer that ESPN was breaking up the pair, with Golic continuing with new hosts and Greenberg moving to his own show, the Post said.

Golic will be paired with Trey Wingo and his son Mike Golic Jr., while Greenberg will cohost

his show with ESPN veteran Michelle Beadle and former NBA star Jalen Rose in the spring, the New York Daily News reported.

"Until I found out it was Trey and Mike, [I thought] maybe at the end of the deal, I just move on, head out to Arizona and retire," Golic told the Post.

"But (ESPN) presented me the thought of Trey doing it and then my son, and … I still love doing it, I still love talking sports. So like I said, I changed teams a few times in the NFL, so it's the same game I'm playing, just with different teammates."

Greenberg told the Post in June when news of the show's demise was first confirmed that it was not of his making.

"I'm going to miss him. It's just that simple," Greenberg told the Post of Golic then. "The decision for me to go do a new show was one that was made by other people. It was not made by me.”

"These 18 years have been the most fun I've ever had. I've laughed more sitting next to Mike Golic, talking about sports and any number of other things, than I have laughed at any other setting in my entire life. … I hope that Mike will continue to be my friend forever."

Many celebrities and fans on social media shared those same good feelings.
