Niels Hoegel has already been convicted of killing two intensive care patients, and now the German nurse faces charges of murdering 97 more people at two hospitals. To find all his victims, authorities have exhumed more than 130 bodies at 67 cemeteries.

Hoegel was sentenced to life behind bars in 2015 for the two murders and two attempted murders at a hospital in the northwestern town of Delmenhorst, but in November prosecutors said the nurse may have killed over 100 patients over the course of several years, Sky News reported.

During his trial, Hoegel admitted to intentionally inducing cardiac crises by administering medication to about 90 percent of his patients in Delmenhorst, where he worked from 2003 to 2005, Time reported.

He also revealed that he had killed patients at a clinic in Oldenburg, where he worked from 1999 to 2002, which prompted investigators to conduct toxicological examinations on other patients who had died at the hospitals.

Their findings led to the new charges.

Prosecutors said of the new cases, 38 occurred in Oldenburg and 62 in Delmenhorst, The Independent reported.

As part of initial investigations, over 130 bodies were exhumed from 67 cemeteries while detectives reviewed more than 500 patient files and hundreds of hospital records.

Hoegel was first arrested in 2005 when a nurse witnessed him attempting to inject a patient at the Delmenhorst hospital.

According to The Straits Times, the patient survived and in 2008 Hoegel was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison for attempted murder.

The case gained much publicity and prompted a woman to contact the police with concerns that her mother may have died at the hands of Hoegel, who admitted to inducing heart failure among his patients, claiming he enjoyed the feeling of resuscitating them and admitting that he acted out of “boredom,” The Straits Times said.
