The Microsoft HoloLens could revolutionize the future of football by creating a mixed-reality viewing experience, the company said as it introduced a mockup of the 3D technology on Tuesday.

On its blog, Microsoft wrote that it showed off the HoloLens headset during a Super Bowl 50 panel discussion about football and the future of technology. A video that promised 3D images of players, replays on demand, and on-the-field graphics from the headset has garnered more than 463,000 views on YouTube since it was posted on Tuesday.

"Imagine the Big Game extended beyond your existing screen, with displays, player stats, and instant replays on your coffee table," Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows and devices group, wrote in the blog post.

"With HoloLens running Windows 10, your favorite players could be brought to life through high-definition, 3D displays — allowing you to experience the athleticism and skills behind their stats. That game-changing play could pop up as a 3D hologram so you could view the field from all angles, all while your fantasy scores update in real time, without the need for you to look down at another screen," Mehdi's statement continued.

Jeff Grubb, a reporter at Venture Beat, wrote that the technology functions without the user having to be anchored down to a desktop or laptop computer.

"It sits over your eyes, and it displays 3D images and 2D windows around your real world," Grubb wrote. "The device doesn't need to plug into a computer, and it isn't a peripheral for your phone. It is a standalone Windows 10 platform, and unlike the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive headsets, HoloLens has all of its processors built into the plastic that wraps around your head."

Sean Hollister, a writer for CNet.com, stated that the HoloLens demo on the video is just a mockup, but added that "most of what we see in the video is probably possible with today's technology."

"All that remains is for the NFL and Microsoft to agree to actually produce such an experience for football fans, figure out how to collect and transmit that data . . . and for the HoloLens headset to cost substantially less than $3,000. Sorry, video-kid-with-the-Niners-flag, you're not getting one this Christmas," he noted.
