A Michigan elementary school teacher escorted two of his former students to their school's annual father-daughter dance weeks after their dad tragically died last month.

Steve Culbert, a teacher at Gates Elementary in Davison, was shocked to hear that the father of his two former students, Avery and Alivia Reece, had been hospitalized for a Protein C deficiency that led to multiple blood clots forming in his body, MLive reported.

He taught Avery Reece during the 2017-2018 school year, and Alivia Reece for the first month of the current school year before he was moved to a different classroom.

During that time, Culbert came to know their parents, Luke and Shelley Reece, and made it a point to visit them in the hospital.

"I know what it's like to hurt as a kid," he told Yahoo Lifestyle, explaining that his 14-year-old brother died from cancer years ago. "Seeing my brother go through what he went through at that age — he was the strongest person I've ever known."

While visiting Luke Reece and his daughters in the hospital, Culbert got chatting to Shelley Reece, and the topic of the annual daddy-daughter dance came up.

Luke Reece never missed the event, or any opportunity to spend with his daughters, according to his obituary.

Culbert and Shelley Reece thought it would be great to extend an invitation to the father and his daughters for the upcoming dance once again but, before the invitations could be handed out, Luke Reece suddenly died at age 32 from cardiac arrest.

Despite the tragedy, they decided to go ahead with the plan, and on Oct. 13, Avery and Alivia Reece were treated to a day of pampering before going to the dance with Culbert and his daughters, Yahoo Lifestyle noted.

They were escorted in a limo to the venue, where they danced the night away before capping the evening off with ice cream at McDonald's.

Culbert told Yahoo Lifestyle that he "couldn't be happier with how it turned out."

Shelley Reece added that she was touched by Culbert's kindness toward her daughters.

"It's just so good that someone outside of the home is looking out from them," she told MLive.
