Michael R. Doty, a South Carolina sheriff's detective, died after being shot while serving in the line of duty when he and his team were ambushed by a domestic violence suspect earlier this week, Fox News reported.

An intense manhunt ended on Tuesday when Christian Thomas McCall, who was wanted for assaulting his wife, shot Doty and three other officers: Sgt. Randy Clinton, Sgt. Buddy Brown and Sgt. Kyle Cummings.

The fallen men were rushed to hospital, where 47-year-old Doty died on Wednesday.

The York County Sheriff's Office confirmed his death on Twitter, noting that it was "with a heavy heart & great sadness that York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson announces the passing of Detective Michael R. Doty."

Fox News reported that Clinton and Brown are in stable condition and Cummings was still recovering from his wounds.

Police were first alerted to the incident on Monday night when McCall's wife called in a domestic violence situation but, by the time they arrived at the scene, the suspect had fled, CBS News noted.

A manhunt ensued, culminating in an ambush by McCall, who opened fire on the deputies in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

McCall was injured in the shootout and remained in the same Charlotte, North Carolina, hospital where the officers were also taken, Fox News reported.

He has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and could face murder charges for Doty's death.

York Police Chief Andy Robinson, whose department had one officer wounded, said that the death of an officer affected the "law enforcement brotherhood," but that it would not deter officers from their commitment to protect the public.

"Every one of my officers, and every officer from other departments I have talked to since this happened, remains committed to helping protect people and serving people," he said, per The Herald. "The best way we can honor Mike Doty is to do what we as police do –serve everyone else."
