Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps will race a great white shark during Discovery's "Shark Week," the network announced Thursday, causing jaws to drop.
"An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark – the race is on!" Discovery said in a news release.
It's unclear how the race will unfold, The Washington Post reported, adding "here's hoping there's more separating Phelps from his foe than just some floating lane markers."
Phelps appeared to allude to the stunt in a post on Instagram.
Great white sharks can reach speeds of up to 25 mph, but typically swim at about 5 mph, Bleacher Report noted, adding that Phelps was clocked at 6 mph.
Discovery's eight-day "Shark Week" begins July 23 and also will feature Phelps swimming near a a hammerhead shark.
Twitter users were amused by the idea.
