Michael Phelps became a father last Thursday after fiancée Nicole Johnson gave birth to a baby boy named Boomer Robert Phelps.
According to ESPN, Phelps shared the news and one of the first photos of the child on Instagram Sunday.
Phelps, who has won 18 Olympic gold medals, has recently been training in preparation for the Summer Olympics in Brazil later this year.
Bob Bowman, Phelps' longtime swimming coach,
told The Associated Press that the child's middle name was in his honor and that it came as "a big surprise."
USA Swimming congratulated the couple in a Twitter message Saturday.
Phelps and Johnson, a former Miss California, have been dating on and off since 2007, and remained friends throughout,
according to People magazine. The couple, both 30, broke up in 2011, but restarted their romantic relationship again in 2014. They became engaged in February of 2015.
The couple made the pregnancy announcement on Nov. 18.
"One of the coolest things about being a father going into Rio is that our firstborn has the chance to see my last race ever," Phelps
told Us Weekly in March. "I think that’s something that'll be really special that we'll be able to share stories with him, you know, from the time he gets old enough to realize, and I'm excited to have a lot of photos and just to share the moments and memories with him growing up as a kid."
Phelps is bouncing back from a trip to rehab in 2014. After receiving two arrests for driving under the influence, he is now attempting to swim in his fifth Olympic games,
noted The Washington Post.
He was taken off the 2015 World Championships team and served a six-month suspension by USA Swimming that ended in April 2015,
The Arizona Republic reported.
