Michael LaPorta's police shooting trial ended with LaPorta being awarded a $44.7 million jury verdict Thursday after he was shot in the head by a Chicago police officer's service weapon in 2010, The Chicago Tribune reported.

Thursday's verdict, which took the 10-member jury about 20 minutes to reach, brings to end a four-week civil trial that has highlighted the issue of police accountability.

According to ABC affiliate WLS, the incident took place on Jan. 12, 2010, when LaPorta was hit in the head by a bullet fired from the gun of his friend and police officer Patrick Kelly.

The two had been out drinking when the shooting occurred.

After the incident, Kelly said his friend had attempted to commit suicide while LaPorta argued that the police officer, who had a history of violence, fired the pistol.

LaPorta was left permanently disabled and reliant on his parents, the Chicago Sun Times noted.

"I feel whole again," LaPorta said upon hearing the verdict, The Chicago Tribune reported.

The city of Chicago was ordered to pay the $44.7 million award as well as LaPorta’s legal fees on the grounds that the Police Department featured a widespread problem in disciplining officers.

Earlier this year Chicago police officer Marco Proano was convicted for "using unreasonable force against two individuals" after he fired 16 shots into a car containing several teens, injuring two, according to a Department of Justice news release.

In a separate incident, Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke was on trial for charges of first-degree murder after he fired 16 shots at 17-year-old Laquan McDonald on Oct. 20, 2014.
